Our Government Documents Collection contains:
- all Nova Scotia Government publications
- selective Canadian Federal Government publications
- complete collection of federal census, Statistics Canada, and parliamentary publications
- publications from other provinces are obtained on an "as required" basis for StFX courses - preference is given to publications with an Atlantic Canada focus
Government Documents are for "in library" use only.
Finding a Government Document
All Government Documents in our collection that were published after 1987 are included in our online library catalogue .
Government Documents are classified using the following classification scheme:
- 2FG North America. Canadian Federal Government
- E Department of External Affairs
- 1 Annual Report
A call number for a Nova Scotia provincial government document publication can be broken down as such:

Citing a Document

Electronic Government Documents
The following databases are helpful when searching for government information.
- CANSIM - offers authoritative data on labour, manufacturing, investment and international trade. With over one million series, CANSIM allows you to track trends and extract data on many social and economic aspects of Canadian life.
- Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) - provides Canadian post-secondary institutions with expanded access to Statistics Canada's data files.
- E-STAT - Statistics Canada product for educational institutions, designed to generate tables, graphs and maps using census and socioeconomic data.
- Equinox - Equinox (formerly The Internet Data Library System (IDLS)) allows students, faculty and researchers to retrieve data subsets from large machine readable data holdings.
- Canadian Parliamentary Review - a quarterly publication promoting the study of and interest in Canadian parliamentary institutions.

- Government of Canada - The official website of the government of Canada; the entry point for current information.
- Library and Archives Canada Government Information - A selective collection of links to Canadian government sites and key federal documents maintained by Library and Archives Canada.
- Justice Canada - Search the Canada Department of Justice website and find current Canadian laws, consolidated statutes and regulations.
- Canada's Parliament - The Parliamentary Internet, created and maintained jointly by the Senate, House of Commons and the Library of Parliament, offers information on the Canadian Parliament.
- Depository Services Program - The Depository Services Program (DSP) is the link between the Canadian federal government and its clients - the Canadian public, other governments, universities and businesses. Its primary objective is to ensure that Canadians have ready and equal access to federal government information.
- Statistics Canada - Statistics Canada works in partnership with all sectors of government, the economy and society to identify and fulfill the information requirements of today and tomorrow. Links are provided to the The Daily (news releases), free online Canadian statistics and census data and other statistical sites.
- Index to Federal Royal Commissions - This index provides bibliographic access to materials associated with more than 200 federal Royal Commissions that have taken place since Confederation. There are approximately 7,000 items in the index that includes commission reports, briefs, submissions, evidence, working papers and other documents.
- Supreme Court Judgments - This link provides the judgments of the Supreme Court of Canada back to 1985. This service is provided through a joint project between the Supreme Court of Canada and the LexUM team of the Centre de recherche en droit public at University of Montreal.
- A Guide to Finding 2006 Census Data - The Maps, Data and Government Information Centre at the Carleton University Library provides an excellent finding aid for 2006 Census data.

- Government of Nova Scotia Homepage - This website is the official electronic connection to the Government of the Province of Nova Scotia.
- Status of Bills - Using an alphabetic or numeric listing, search the current session of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly for progress of bills.
- Statutes - Search the Nova Scotia website and find current provincial laws, consolidated statutes and regulations.
